Trinity Primary School

Languages

To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.

Chinese proverb

At Trinity Primary School we believe that the learning of an additional language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including the key skills of speaking and listening, and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

The focus language taught in our school is Spanish.

Our Trinity Curriculum is designed with the intent to maximise the potential of all our pupils; intellectually, socially, morally, emotionally and culturally.  We take every opportunity to encourage a love for learning within our pupils, based around a resilience for learning and achieving greatness.  Most importantly we allow our children to learn in a safe and stimulating environment, where their views are valued.

In key stage 2, every class has a  weekly timetabled lesson which is delivered by our Specialist Spanish teacher, Mrs Culshaw. Teachers are present in classes during this time and this helps them to embed the skills of the specialist teacher throughout the school day.

Our aim is that children will engage with language lessons that are fun, develop communication and confidence building while further developing learning strategies, and provide our children with the opportunity to learn about similarities and differences and respecting others.

Culture plays a huge part in language lessons. Festivals/celebrations are taught where appropriate throughout the year to each year group e.g. European Day of Languages, Christmas, etc.

We celebrate European Day of Languages every September. During this whole school day, the children dress up , taste foods, learn the local language and discover the cultures of different European countries. By the time the children leave year 6 they will have learnt about 8 different European countries.
